Two-thirds of parents didn't get their first choice of a place at one Leicestershire school this year.

Figures show just 35% of those who put Madani Girls' School, in Evington, as their first choice secondary secured a place for this September.

The school had 2.9 first preference applications for each of the 60 places offered - 172 in total.

Including second and third preferences, there were 4.6 applications for each offered place, with no second or third preferences getting a place.

Madani Boys School, in Leicester, was the next hardest secondary to get into locally, with just 43% of those who put it as a first preference getting a place.

There were 2.3 first preferences for the school, a total of 138, for each of its 60 places offered.

The Pochin School in Barkby was the hardest primary school to secure a place at locally.

The school had 1.7 first preferences for each of the 20 places offered, with just 52% of those who put the school as their first choice getting a place.

Overall, the primary school was put down as a preference 75 times, with three second preferences being successful.

Fossebrook Primary School, in Leicester Forest East, saw 54 first preferences for 28 places offered - 1.9 per place - with just 52% of parents who put it as a first choice being offered a place.

Nationally King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys in Birmingham is the toughest secondary school to get a place at. 

Just 10% of those who put it as a first preference secured a place in 2018. 

It had 263 first preferences - 2.2 for each of the 117 places offered - and 11.2 preferences per place in total.

Peter Gladwin Primary School in Brighton and Hove was the hardest primary to get into, with just 10% of those who put it as a first preference getting a place. 

While it had 29 first preference offers compared to 30 places offered, just three children who had it as a first choice got a place.

The Royal School, Wolverhampton, had 7.9 first place preferences for each of offer - a total of 246 compared to 31 places - the highest ratio in England.

Overall, the school had 28.5 preferences per offered place.

The data from the Department for Education is based on figures from National Offers Day, so data held directly by individual schools may differ, for example, because late applications were included.

The application process for places in September 2020 will re-open at the start of this month as pupils head back to schools.

This year’s deadline for applying for a reception place is January 15, 2020, while it is October 31, for secondary applications.
