A student at Loughborough University died of a suspected drugs overdose this morning, the institution's vice chancellor has confirmed.

The student became ill and died after taking an unidentified substance at an event off the campus.

The death and the circumstances surrounding it are being investigated by Leicestershire Police.

The university has urged students to dispose of any illegal drugs they may be in possession of.

In a message to staff and students, Professor Bob Allison said: "It is with sadness that I write to inform you that a student died in the early hours of this morning.

"This occurred, we believe, after a suspected accidental drug overdose.

Loughborough University. Students on campus.

"The tragedy took place at an event in Loughborough, away from the University campus.

"My colleagues and I are working with Leicestershire Police to establish further details.

"The student’s family has been informed.

"My primary concern is our students’ safety.

"We know contaminated drugs can be a particular problem and we are therefore urging you to dispose of any illegal drugs you may have in your possession.

"You can do this by surrendering, in confidence, anything that you want to dispose of at the University security lodge.

"Whilst we would normally take very robust action on any drug possession, anyone disposing of substances at Security in the next 24 hours will not face any sanction or further action.

"We are a close family at Loughborough and this may hit some of us hard. Let us please support each other at this sad time."
