A 19-year-old man was stabbed in Leicester city centre this evening, police have confirmed.

The teenager was injured in Humberstone Gate shortly before 6pm this evening.

Police have cordoned off two areas of pavement in Humberstone Gate as they investigate the incident.

One is outside the New Look store at the junction with Charles Street and the other is the other side of Humberstone Gate near to a chinese takeaway.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

A Leicestershire spokeswoman said: “We were called at 5.50pm to a report of a stabbing in Humberstone Gate.

“A 19-year-old man was injured and has been taken to Queen’s Medical Centre for treatment to a stab wound.

"There are cordons in place in Humberstone Gate and in Charles Street. The incident happened in Charles Street, and the injured man then moved to Humberstone Gate.

“No arrests have been made at this point.

“There were a lot of people in the area. This was prime commuting time. Anyone who saw anything is asked to please contact us on 101.”

Patrol and Resolution Inspector Gaynor Turner is dealing with the incident.

She said: “We know there were some cross words between the suspects and the injured man just before the incident from some witnesses we have already spoken to.

“But any information that can help us identify the person, or people responsible for causing this injury, is vital.”
