A woman suffered head injuries after a car crashed into a tree in Saffron Lane, Leicester.

Police, firefighters and ambulances were called to the busy city road at about 11.35am this morning after getting reports of the crash.

Fire crews at the scene had to cut the woman free from the vehicle, which was on its side. She was taken to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham suffering from head injuries.

The road remained closed until just before 3pm today.

A Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We were called to Saffron Lane at 11.38am after receiving reports a car had gone into a tree.

"Two appliances from Central Fire and Rescue Station attended and one female casualty was extricated and taken to Queen's Medical Centre by road ambulance. She was suffering from head injuries."

He said there was also oil on the road.

He was unable to say how serious the woman's injuries were. Queen's Medical Centre specialises in treating head injuries.

The road was closed from the Aylestone Road junction to the junction with Hughenden Drive between about 11.30am and 3pm.

Closure still in place and traffic building

With rugby traffic heading into Leicester this afternoon, the closure of Saffron Lane is causing some extra congestion on both Aylestone Road and Welford Road. There is also quite a bit of traffic queuing on Saffron Lane itself. The Google Maps image below shows slow-moving traffic in red.
