People are gearing up for the last bank holiday weekend of the summer, with weather forecasters decidedly unclear about what we can expect in Leicester and Leicestershire.

There is hushed talk of a heatwave for the August bank holiday, however, the Met Office itself is not promising anything.

A spokesman for the national weather service said: "There is a lot of uncertainty at this stage for the weekend's weather, but we will probably see the unsettled weather continuing."

"It may well be a largely dry and bright weekend."

It's no guarantee of course, but this is what the experts reckon...

Cloudy conditions will greet early risers on Saturday morning, a state of play that will continue for most of the day.

Despite the overcast weather, the maximum temperature is expected to peak at a seasonably pleasant 25C (77F) at around 4pm.

There will be more of the same on Sunday morning, fortunately or unfortunately, with the sun finally showing its face in the early afternoon.

One again, 25C will be the maximum temperature expected, with cloud cover returning from 7pm until the end of the day.

Bank holiday Monday looks like a similar story, with a bright start to the day giving way to cloudy conditions from 10am through to 7pm, when the sun may well offer us a picturesque sunset.

The top temperature for the day is anticipated to be 24C, so there's no cause for complaint there at least.

And it should be mainly dry too.

Beyond the Met Office, it seems that forecasters are decidedly more optimistic about the bank holiday conditions for the UK as a whole.

According to MirrorOnline, it could even be the hottest August bank holiday Monday on record, with the mercury gauge rising as high as 28C (82F) in certain parts of the UK.

However, forecasters at netweather.tv are more cautious and have predicted highs of 27C in London on Monday, just below the record.

A spokesman for the website, nonetheless, predicted warm weather for much of the country over the bank holiday weekend.

They said: "There are signs that parts of the UK could see some fine, warm and sunny weather.

"This looks more likely for England and inland Wales, but the far north-west of England joins Northern Ireland and Scotland with a higher risk of rain, more cloud and temperatures remaining in the high teens/ low 20s.

"For the rest of England and Wales temperatures could reach into the mid to high twenties.

However, there is still a lot of uncertainty with the weekend forecast. High pressure is trying to build up from the south but low pressures and weather fronts continue to interrupt from the north-west."

Betway is offering 2/1 odds on the August bank holiday being the hottest on record.

Company spokesman Alan Alger told the Daily Express :"The ever-changing nature of the UK’s island climate has left us offering odds on August being the wettest on record one minute, to suddenly betting on bank holiday Monday being the hottest ever.

“After a week of low temperatures and showers we’re now looking at a strong chance of Monday breaking the record for being the warmest ever August bank holiday, a record that currently stands at 28.2C – ditch the raincoats and dig out the sun cream!”
