Sainsbury's have announced the closure of a second local store in Leicestershire in a week.

On Monday the popular UK store announced the closure of a local store in South Wigston much to the shock of many local residents.

Today, the store has revealed a second store is to close its doors at the end of the year.

That store is the Sainsbury's Local on Narborough Road, a popular part of the city centre with a large amount of housing.

Speaking to LeicestershireLive a spokeswoman said: “Our Narborough Road Local store will be closing later this year.

"Customers can continue to shop with us at a number of nearby stores and colleagues will be offered the opportunity to redeploy.”

What residents said

The Sainsbury's Local store on Narborough Road is surrounded by terraced houses, small businesses and restaurants.

Therefore the store is convenient to those that live and work in the area who need only walk down the road to get their morning paper, bottle of milk or lunch.

One of those residents is 28-year-old Gareth John, he said: "It's a big loss, it's so convenient.

"I used to go in almost every day, probably about 3-4 times a week to get small bits.

"Its a big surprise to hear it's closing because it's always busy.

"I have friends that work there as well so on a personal level it's pretty sad too."

Residents and shoppers alike were shocked to here of the store's planned closure.

Another resident, who wished to remain unnamed, said that it was a "big shock" to hear of the store's closure.

She said: "It's always open early in the morning, which is good for us if we're on a morning shift.

"We use the shop at least once a day, someone in the house is always going.

"It was good that it was so close, it was useful so yes - not happy. I'm in shock."

A customer who had left the store just a moment earlier carrying a famous bright orange Sainsbury's bag was also surprised to hear of the shop's impending closure.

He said: "It's a surprise, there's definitely always people in there.

"It's just really surprising that it's going to be gone, it is really convenient."

A string of closures

The store isn't the first to reveal its closure in this area of late.

The Central England Co-operative store on Briton Street just off Narborough Road has also announced it will close.

A spokesman from the Co-operative said that the store's closure was due to "a decline in sales".

A deal has been agreed with another retail company called Samy LTD who will take over the premises this weekend.

Waitrose also announced that their store in Oadby will be closing earlier this week.

Lidl is set to take its place at an unknown date.

Sainsbury's did not reveal the exact dates of when its Narborough Road and Gloucester Crescent stores will be closing.

It is also not known whether those buildings will be taken over by another retailer.
