While we are all stuck in lockdown, many of our favourite places to visit in our free time are closed.

But what are Leicestershire people most looking forward to visiting once they are able?

LeicestershireLive turned to TripAdvisor to put together this list of what users rate as the 'best' attractions in the county.

Some are to expected - but some of those on the list might come as a surprise.

From country parks to museums, here are the top 10 places which visitors rated as the best places to visit on 19 May 2020.

At the top of the list of 'Traveller Favourites' is the King Richard III visitor centre, in St Martins, in Leicester City Centre.

Opened in 2014 following the discovery of Richard III's remains in a car park, the museum has proved popular with tourists and Leicester locals.

The museum, built over where the king's remains were found, uses 'storytelling, design and 21st century technology' to tell the story of Richard's life, death and eventual discovery.

It is rated 4.5 stars on 2,086 reviews.

National Space Centre

A staple for schoolchildren across the East Midlands, the National Space Centre has been popular for people of all ages since it opened in 2001.

The museum, in Exploration Drive, near Abbey Park, teaches visitors about everything from the planets, to stars to space travel.

It is also home to the UK's largest planetarium, in which it holds daily shows, and houses Thor Able and Blue Streak rockets it its iconic Rocket Tower.

It is rated 4 stars on 3,313 reviews.

Great Central Railway

The Great Central Railway (GCR) is the UK's only mainline heritage railway, on which full-size steam engines regularly run.

When they are open as normal, the GCR runs every weekend of the year, bank holidays and some weekdays through the summer.

They also run various special events, including steam galas, bonfire night and Santa specials.

It is rated 4.5 stars on 1,435 reviews.

Melton Country Park

Melton Country Park, in Wymondham Way, Melton is a 137-acre space that is 'scenic all year round' is great for dog walkers.

There is also a play area for children, and wild birds and ducks can be seen there all year round.

There is also a community cafe open seven days a week - but it is currently closed due to lockdown.

It is rated 4.5 stars on 99 reviews.

New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, in New Walk, is 'Leicester's original museum' which has 'wide ranging collections and displays'.

The galleries include Ancient Egypt, Dinosaurs, Wild Space, The Den gallery - for kids under five - the Victorian art gallery, Arts and Crafts Gallery, Picasso ceramics, and modern and contemporary art displays.

It also has an array of temporary exhibitions throughout the year.

It has 4.5 stars on 771 reviews.

Curve Theatre

The Curve, in Rutland Street, is the go-to destination in Leicester for theatre and performing arts lovers.

As well as producing its own shows, the theatre also plays host to touring productions.

The listing on TripAdvisor reads: "Curve produces a varied programme of diverse, exciting and inspiring theatre including large scale musicals to rival the West End."

It is 4.5 stars on 1,315 reviews.

Twinlakes

Twinlakes Family Theme Park opened in 2003, and has been popular with families ever since.

The theme park, in Tumbledown Farm, Spinney Road, Melton, has rides, indoor play barns, outdoor adventures and a water park.

It has a rating of 4 stars on 1,672 reviews.

Farndon Fields Farm Shop

Something a bit different from the other places on the top 10 list is Farndon Fields Farm Shop, in Farndon Road, Market Harborough.

Farndon Fields was founded in 1983, and has grown into an award winning business, consisting of a 550 acre farm as well as the garm shop.

It has a butchery, bakery, deli as well as selling groceries, drinks, and gifts.

It is rated 4.5 stars on 520 reviews.

Belvoir Brewery

Belvoir Brewery, based in Station Road, Old Dalby, near Melton, has been brewing beer since 1995.

As well as the brewery, which you can take a tour of, it also has The Alehouse visitor centre on site, complete with bar, restaurant and shop.

It has a 4.5 star rating on 154 reviews.

Social Climbing

The last attraction on the list of Travellers Favourites for Leicestershire is Social Climbing, a bouldering centre in Leicester city centre.

The centre in East Bond Street, was the first centre of its kind in the UK when it opened in September 2018.

It has more than 700spm of climbing 'for all ages and abilities'.

It is rated 5 stars on 124 reviews.
