UPDATE: The road has now reopened.

A road in Coalville has been closed for hours after a car drove into a 4 metre trench.

Leicestershire Police tweeted about the incident at around 5am this morning warning motorists of the closures and to avoid the area.

The A511 Bardon Road had been closed in both directions because of the incident.

Traffic monitoring system INRIX also warned drivers to avoid the area from Bardon Road to Grange Road.

A car ended up in the trench.

They reported: "Due to a car that has driven through the works into the trench in the road Severn Trent were using to install a water main.

"Affecting traffic travelling between Leicester and Ashby-de-la-Zouch."

The car was recovered at 7.30am however the road needs to be resurfaced.

As of 8am the road remain closed and it's not known if the driver suffered any injuries.

Police tweeted at around 8.30am to say that the hole would be filled with tarmac and as a result the road would remain closed until the afternoon.
