A car had a 'high speed' collision with a bus leading to a Loughborough road being closed for several hours through the night.

At around 2.50am emergency services were called to the A512 Ashby Road westbound, close to the entrance to the Loughborough University campus.

Three fire crews from the town and nearby Birstall attended the location between Schofield Road and Holywell Way to find a collision, which involved "one car having had a high speed impact into rear of a bus".

Police closed the road to traffic while work was carried out at the scene to free two male casualties who were trapped by their injuries inside the car.

Firefighters made space for treatment to be carried out by East Midlands Ambulance Service. One man who had suffered head injuries walked free while a second had to be extricated by the fire service onto a long board.

Both were taken to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham while the vehicles were made safe.

The road was fully reopened to traffic at around 5.30am.
