A blaze at a waste recycling centre, which saw 11 crews from across the county tackling flames at its height, started accidentally.

An electrical fault is believed to have triggered the blaze, at the Biffa waste management site, in Snibston Drive, Coalville, which saw flames shoot 50 feet in the air.

Shortly after 6.30pm a bailing machine at the site caught fire, setting 50 tonnes of baled waste paper alight.

Flames shot high into the air and there were loud cracks and pops as the fire sent sparks into the sky over Coalville.

At its height, 11 fire crews, from Coalville, Ashby, Castle Donington, Shepshed Leicester’s Western station and Melbourne, just over the Derbyshire border, were involved fighting the flames.

Firefighters remained at the scene throughout the night into yesterday (Jan 22).

Although the ambulance service attended due to the size of the fire, no-one was injured at or near the scene.

Severn Trent posted a statement during the blaze, advising its customers water pressure may be lower or appear slightly discoloured while firefighters tackled the flames.

Today, a Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said that after in inspection of the scene the fire was believed to be accidental, sparked by an electrical fault.
