The city council and a number of borough and district councils have revealed what will happen to parks in their areas in light of the changes to lockdown rules.

Leicester City Council, Harborough District Council, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, Melton Borough Council, Blaby District Council and Charnwood Borough Council have all revealed what is changing in their parks.

It was announced on Sunday by prime minister Boris Johnson that there would be an easing of lockdown rules, including that people would now be allowed to go outside for 'unlimited exercise'.

A government official said yesterday (May 11) that as long as a two-metre distance is maintained, people will be allowed to sunbathe or chat with one other person from a different household.

In response to these changes, some of Leicester and Leicestershire's councils have confirmed what will change this week.

Leicester City Council

The city council has kept all parks within the city limits open during lockdown, but advised residents to maintain a safe distance from others.

Signs have been up in parks reminding those using the park of the safe 2m social distancing rule.

However, playgrounds and play equipment for children have remained off limits, however some changes would be coming into place from today.

These include reopening tennis courts at 10 Leicester parks to the public.

A spokesperson for the city council said today: "All of Leicester's parks remained open during lockdown so that people could enjoy a walk or a run in the fresh air.

Abbey Park, Leicester

"While the parks remained open, play areas, ball courts and outdoor gyms were closed - as was Pets' Corner in Abbey Park.

"These facilities will remain closed until further notice to ensure that social distancing measures can be maintained.

"From tomorrow (Wednesday), however, tennis courts at 10 Leicester parks and open spaces will re-open to the public on a turn-up-and-play basis.

"Signs are already up in Leicester's parks, reminding people to stay two metres apart from anyone from outside their own household, and these will also be affixed to the tennis courts.

"The new Government guidance allows an individual to meet up with someone from a separate household, as long as they are outdoors and remain two metres apart.

"Our parks staff will be reminding people of the guidelines while they're out and about in our parks and open spaces."

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council

All parks in the Hinckley and Bosworth borough have remained open throughout lockdown, apart from playgrounds and outdoor gyms.

However, the council is 'considering options for safely reopening some facilities' in parks.

According to the council, these include tennis courts and 'multi-use games areas'. However, they are not yet open, according to a spokeswoman.

Council advice states from Wednesday May 13 in line with new government guidance parks can now be visited as often as you wish.

This is the case as long as visitors stay two metres apart from others.

Visitors can only play team sports with members of your own household, and they are not allowed to use playgrounds or outdoor gym equipment.

Park users can also meet up with one other person from outside your household if you stay two metres apart.

Signs will also be posted around the borough's parks to remind visitors of the rules.

Melton Borough Council

Parks in the Melton borough have remained open during lockdown, to let residents exercise.

However, all play areas and equipment are closed 'as per government guidance'.

A spokeswoman for the council said: "All residents are encouraged through signage where appropriate to retain two metre distance at all times in the Country Park.

"Following the announcement on Sunday, we will be reiterating the new guidance in regards to exercising in household groups."

New signage will also be put in place to remind the public of the guidelines.

Charnwood Borough Council

The Outwoods and Shelthorpe Golf Course have remained closed throughout lockdown.

According to the council, plans are being finalised about reopening them both.

Signs will also be put around the parks to remind the public of government guidelines around social distancing.

Harborough District Council

Harborough District Council, which covers a huge area of south Leicestershire stretching all the way from Lutterworth to Tilton on the Hill, has also given advice on using parks.

Much like other areas of the city and county, the district's parks have remained open, and playgrounds have been closed to the public and will remain closed.

Blaby District Council

Blaby District Council has also kept all parks open throughout lockdown.

However, playgrounds and play areas are closed at Nowell Close, Glen Parva; Foulds Lane, Whetstone; Roundhills Park, Elmesthorpe; The Osiers; Braunstone Town; Copt Oak, Narborough and Fosse Meadows, Sharnford.

The council is giving out the latest government advice on social distancing, and signs are in place to remind park users.

New signs will be posted where necessary, according to a council spokesman.

County Council

Nick Rushton, county council leader, has that car parks at country parks are being re-opened.

He said: "Following the latest Government guidance issued earlier this week, we've been working through what this means for country parks to ensure people can enjoy our green spaces as part of their daily exercise.

"From today (Wednesday May 13), we've started to re-open the car parks at our various sites, but playgrounds, toilets, cafes and other visitor facilities will remain closed until further notice.

"Our primary focus is to maintain safety and welfare for our residents, visitors and our staff. There will be signs in place in all of our parks reminding the public of the need to maintain social distancing.

"We hope that people will be responsible and once again enjoy the Leicestershire countryside."
