An investigation into a hit-and-run accident was called off after police decided a cyclist who suffered a serious head injury had fallen off his bike.

The 65-year-old cyclist had been found lying in Leicester Road, Whitwick, near Coalville , at about 1.45am today and the person who found him called 999.

When East Midlands Ambulance Service arrived they called the police because the man believed he had been knocked off his bike by a motorist in a hit-and-run.

The road was closed by Leicestershire Police but their investigation was quickly brought to a halt after they concluded there had been no other vehicles involved and that the man had been “confused” and had fallen off his bike.

The road was re-opened at 2.40am and police said the man was recovering in hospital from injuries that are serious but non-life-threatening.

A police spokesman said: “It came into us via East Midlands Ambulance Service as a potential hit-and-run.

“The reason we closed the road was because of that information.

“We got there and located a man with a serious head injury on the ground, which we thought was linked to a potential hit-and-run.

“But it appears he was confused and had fallen off his bike, hitting his head and that had caused his injury. There was nothing to suggest it was attributable to a vehicle.”
