A former pub in Coalville will be given a new lease of life as work begins to transform it into a brand new indoor market.

Once the work is completed, the former Litten Tree pub in Marlborough Square will be home to stalls from the original market hall plus new traders, including start-ups.

As well as the indoor market, regular outdoor markets will be held just outside the old pub.

Once the full renovation of the square is complete, there will be an opportunity for events to be held inside the space and out.

North West Leicestershire District Council have put £600,000 towards the purchase and renovation of the building.

The work to transform the space will begin with the roof, with scaffolding being erected today.

The work will include removing and replacing slates, removing the stone chipping, installing insulation and installing a new roof cover.

Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of North West Leicestershire District Council, said: "Anyone looking at the old Litten Tree can see that the building is in a sorry state, and this is one of the things that convinced us to buy it and turn it into a lively market and events space.

"We're working with private investors around the town to bring empty, unattractive buildings back into use – the former Pick and Shovel is now a high quality apartment development and the crumbling former bus depot has been given a new lease of life as a car showroom. Both of these projects involved our work and financial support and we're very proud of this.

"The Litten Tree is on Marlborough Square, where we are planning to create an attractive public open space – it makes perfect sense for us to transform the building into a welcoming market hall and bring complementary indoor and outdoor markets into the centre of town."

The current market in the existing Market Hall will remain open until the new one is ready.
