Detectives are investigating an allegation of serious fraud at a Leicestershire’s doctors practice.

Police say they have received a report from the Kibworth Medical Centre about financial irregularities at the practice in Smeeton Road, Kibworth Beauchamp.

The specific details of the alleged offence have not been revealed nor the exact sum of cash said to be involved but it is understood to be substantial.

A Leicestershire police spokesman said: “Leicestershire Police are carrying out further Inquiries after they received an allegation of financial irregularities at a medical practice in Kibworth.

“While those enquiries are ongoing it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”

No arrests have been made so far.

The medical centre is part of the South Leicestershire Medical Group.

A statement on behalf of the group has been issued saying: “South Leicestershire Medical Group have reported allegations of financial irregularities to Leicestershire Police and are assisting with their enquiries.

“So as not to impede the police investigation, we are not in a position to provide further details at this time.

“We understand that the news may be of concern to our patients and the local community.

“Please be assured that South Leicestershire Medical Group is committed to providing the best possible services to our patients and we are keen to stress that there is nothing to suggest patient care or services have been adversely affected and we will continue to provide all our services as normal.”

A spokeswoman for the medical group said the matter had been thoroughly investigated internally though she declined to say whether any staff members had been suspended or dismissed.
