A land owner has pledged to work to address ongoing problems with travellers in Hinckley.

Taylor Wimpey owns a strip of landscaped grass between Whitworth Avenue and Canal Way, and the Ashby Canal where caravans have pitched up several times over the past few years.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough councillor David Bill wrote to the developer twice in February 2019 to ask them to install a fence to dissuade people from parking up there.

A Taylor Wimpey spokesperson said: “We have recently received communication from Leicestershire County councillor David Bill asking us to consider putting up a fence around our land off Whitworth Avenue, to help prevent unauthorised access.

“We are currently investigating proposals to address this issue and will work with the local planning authority on this matter.”

The group said it had received two complaints from residents about travellers illegally accessing the land and that both times they had been resolved.

It also said it would contact Coun Bill directly to discuss the issue.

Travellers last parked on the strip of grass in August 2018 and there were other incidents in 2015 and 2016.

Coun Bill said: “This is at least the second time there had been an unwelcome incursion and I have been asking for measures to be put in place to prevent a recurrence.

“The council is not in a position to erect a fence as the area still belongs to Taylor Wimpey who seem reluctant to transfer the land to the council despite several requests.

“This was a relatively minor incident but I still remember when Clarendon Park was totally taken over a few years ago and I do not want to see a repeat performance.

“I have now written to Taylor Wimpey on two occasions recently asking them to take action."

One resident of Canal Way claimed that when a group of  travellers were last there, police were called out several times and neighbours were often kept up by noise and shouting.

She said: “All they have to do is put up a low level fence and it would put them off.

“My neighbour said they are sick of it.”
