Key workers and over-65s with symptoms of coronavirus can get tested in Hinckley over the next few days.

A mobile testing unit will be deployed for three days in the town and will operate on an appointment-only basis.

You can apply for the test if you have symptoms and are aged over 65, are an essential worker, or you work away from home.

You are also eligible if you have symptoms and live with a key worker, a person aged 65 or over, or someone who travels to work.

Covid-19 symptoms include having a high temperature or a new, continuous cough.

The unit in Hinckley is one of 100 mobile coronavirus testing units that are travelling across the country to areas where there is high demand for tests or where it is difficult for people to get to their nearest regional drive-through site.

The centres can be set up in less than 20 minutes, meaning hundreds more people can be tested each day in hard-to-reach areas.

They increase access to testing for areas such as care homes, police stations and prisons.

Trained operators, including military personnel, will collect swabs at the mobile sites, before they are sent to labs for processing. Tests results will be returned within 48 hours.

The new units will work alongside the country’s drive-through test sites, sending patient samples to the network of Lighthouse diagnostic labs, to rapidly increase the number of tests done each day.

Testing Minister Lord Bethell said: “We have been clear that everyone who needs a coronavirus test should be able to access one and our mobile testing units take tests directly to the people that need them.

“Mobile units provide a vital service to protect the vulnerable and help people that test negative for the virus safely get back to work.

“The mobile unit in Hinckley is one of a growing network of pop-up sites, with more than 100 now travelling across the country.”
