A Leicestershire county councillor and a GP from Oxfordshire are in the running to become David Tredinnick’s successor.

More than 100 Tory hopefuls applied to become the Bosworth prospective parliamentary candidate (PPC), but that number has now been whittled down to two.

Mr Tredinnick has announced he will step down at the next election, which could potentially happen in the coming weeks, after 27 years in parliament.

On Thursday evening local conservatives are due to meet in Earl Shilton to decide who becomes the final candidate.

Coun Peter Bedford and Dr Luke Evans

Peter Bedford, who is chairman of the Bosworth Conservative Association and county councillor for Markfield, Desford and Thornton, is in a run off with Dr Luke Evans.

Dr Evans, from Abingdon, has previously been shortlisted in Birmingham where he has worked.

A Tory source has told LeicestershireLive: “This is very much the local candidate vs the CCHQ poster boy.

“People might not want another parachutist over  a local candidate. It’ll be closely fought.”

Whoever wins will defend Mr Tredinnick’s 18,351 majority.

Mr Tredinnick, has declined to comment on the selection process but he previously said: “It’s possible there will be an early General Election and I want to give my association a lot of time to find the right candidate.

“I’m not going to say anything about who that should be but I’m glad I have been able to make it a seat that people will take an interest in.

“It’s time to make way for a younger candidate with new ideas.”

County councillor Michael Mullaney will contest the seat for the Lib Dems with Tracey Maitland selected to stand for the Brexit Party.

Labour has yet to select its Bosworth candidate.
