Officials have revealed the Leicestershire schools where a CCTV car has caught the most parents parking illegally at dropping off or picking up time.

Last week Leicestershire County Council said its enforcement operation to try to make the areas outside school gates safer had resulted in nearly 150 fines of £70 being issued to drivers who stopped their vehicles in the restricted zig-zag zones.

Now the council has listed the schools where most penalties have been issued as part of its School Keep Clear project since April 1 last year.

The camera car does planned patrols outside 78 primary and secondary schools which have signed up for enforcement.

Another 77 will join the scheme later this year.

Enforcement officers carry out their normal duties while the camera car is being used as part of the scheme.

Using automatic number plate recognition technology, the car is used by officers to collect the necessary evidence to enable fines to be issued, via post, to drivers who park on zig-zag markings.

'It's about safety, not fines'

Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for transport and the environment Councillor Blake Pain added: “The trial isn’t about catching and fining motorists – we want people to stop parking inconsiderately near schools as it endangers the lives of pedestrians and causes a great deal of concern for schools and parents.

“We work closely with schools and colleges to improve issues around on-street parking which involves providing help and guidance on school travel plans to help tackle the problem where necessary.”
