There was a crash on the M1 this afternoon between Lutterworth and Leicestershire.

The vehicle left the carriageway and ended up on its roof.

Warning of the incident Highways England tweeted: "We are taking multiple reports of an RTC where the vehicle has then left the carriageway between J20 Lutterworth and J21 Leicester. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, Highways East Midlands Traffic Officers are en-route.

"Please pass with consideration for those working on the hard shoulder."

Highways England says it has cleared all lanes.

Driver out safely - vehicle was in woodland, not on the road

The fire crews that arrived at the scene have reported that the vehicle involved was on its roof in woodland, not on the motorway as earlier reports had suggested.

In their summary of the incident, the crews said the driver had managed to get out of the vehicle safely and that they were now leaving the scene.

Their report stated: “One vehicle road traffic collision. Vehicle has left the carriageway and is on its roof in woodland. Driver self-extricated from the vehicle and has no injuries.

“Incident has now been left In the hands of the highways agency.”

Traffic appears to be flowing normally in the area.

Car 'upside down on the carriageway'

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they had just arrived at the incident.

A spokeswoman said: “We were called at 11.21am today to an incident on the northbound carriageway of the M1 between junctions 20 and 21.

“The first reports indicated it was a car upside down on the carriageway”.
