A man has died following reports of an "explosion" at a property in a Leicestershire village.

Emergency services went to Main Street, Newton Burgoland, near Ashby, at around 8.30pm on Saturday, June 1.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS), which was first on the scene, contacted Leicestershire Police and a cordon was placed around the scene.

East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) also attended the incident.

Fire investigators are still there today and a cordon remains in place.

One villager, who asked not to be named, said: "He'd lived there for a good while. I went to school with him.

"His wife passed away a couple of years ago and he never got over it, really.

"We never heard a thing on the night, we found out from my daughter who lives in Ravenstone.

"It's terrible, really, he would have been about 68 and was retired."

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police said: “We were called at 8.30pm on Saturday, June 1 by the fire service reporting their attendance at a house fire in Main Street, Newton Burgoland.

“Officers attended, together with the ambulance service.

“A man in his 60s was pronounced dead at the scene. Formal identification of the deceased has not yet taken place.

“A cordon is in place at the address while inquiries are ongoing.”

LFRS Station Manager Wayne Gale said:"The incident occurred around 8.30pm on Saturday evening.

"Three fire crews attended a serious fire on arrival.

"Unfortunately, one male person was found deceased within the property.

"Currently, the fire service and police scenes of crime are carrying out a joint investigation into the incident."

Gas distribution network Cadent say they have no record of being called to the village.
