Science, transport, fashion and more used to entertain crowds of visitors at one of Leicestershire's lost visitor attractions.

Nowadays only a few crossed out brown signs remain to show where Snibston Discovery Park used to stand on a site that has made way for new housing developments in Coalville.

Only the historic headstocks, which are registered monuments, and The Century Theatre, remain of the day out which was popular with school trips and hosted a range of events.

The attraction was closed in the summer of 2017 as part of cost-cutting measures by Leicestershire County Council despite a determined campaign to save it.

It brought to an end 25 years of welcoming visitors to the Discovery Park, which opened in 1992.

Popular exhibits at the site included a booth that created a twister around you, plasma orbs you could touch to make electricity dance around your hands, a cycling skeleton, extensive fashion galleries, a huge transport display, outdoor interactive play areas and a colliery tour.

Many Coalville residents still miss the museum, two years on from its demolition.

Jon Bloor said: "Worked there for 15 years. Had my wedding reception in the theatre. So sad it has gone."

Jo Mary-Elizabeth said: "We used to visit regularly, it played a big part of my kids growing up!

"We loved the Miners Gala where the atmosphere there was brilliant. We also enjoyed some quieter visits where the kids loved to play and explore.

"We'll always miss Snibston."

Peggy Simmons said: "Taking the grandchildren was great. They loved discovering the wonders of this brilliant place, now sadly taken away from us."

Stephanie Elizabeth Whitehead said: "I went on many school trips to Snibston. The highlight was pedalling the bike with another bike and skeleton attached, using the giant magnet to lift the mini and moving the 'lightning' with your fingers on the plasma orb!

"As a family we loved the amazing bonfire and firework display in November every year!

"In my teens I had A-level art work displayed in an exhibition in they foyer of the museum. In more recent times I regularly visited the Symmington Fashion Gallery, where I did a lot of my research for my degree in contour fashion.

"The last visit I made was with my cousin and her young daughter, we had a brilliant day and played outside mostly.

"It's very sad I will never be able to take my daughter."

Another person who misses it said: "We loved it there and spent an extremely emotional final day there, I'm gutted my daughter was too young to remember it and my son will never experience it, it was fun and interactive and a massive part of Coalville history that has been lost."
