Highways bosses say they are planning more safety measures at an accident blackspot where a woman was injured in a crash today.

The accident happened just before 8am at the Charley Road crossroads in Iveshead Road on the outskirts of Shepshed, and led to firefighters cutting the injured motorist free from the wreckage of her car which had collided with another vehicle.

It is the latest in a series of collisions at the junction which have already prompted some safety improvements with more in the pipeline.

A recent Freedom of Information disclosure from Leicestershire Police revealed that between the beginning of 2014 up until the end of 2018,  there have been 23 crashes at that one junction.

Leicestershire County Council is responsible for highways safety.

A council spokeswoman said: “We’re sorry to hear about the incident this morning at the Iveshead Road/Abbey Road/Charley Road junction in Shepshed, and are still awaiting further information from the police.

“Since 2016, a number of safety measures have been introduced, including additional signage, road surface improvements, installing rumble strips and a speed reduction to 50mph.

“We are currently waiting on dates to begin further improvement works including introducing measures such as new lining and putting in additional vehicle activated signs. In the meantime we will continue to monitor this junction.

Police closed the road to traffic in both directions during the rescue and recovery operation this morning causing significant rush hour delays and congestion in the area.

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: “One woman has been taken to hospital, but her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.”

The road was reopened by 11am.

It was one of two crashes in Shepshed dealt with by the emergency services this morning.

Belton Street, near the centre of the town, was also closed due to a two-vehicle collision shortly before 7.30am.

A police spokesman said: “Three people were injured in the collision.

“They have been taken to hospital for treatment, however, their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.” The road was cleared and reopened by 10.15am.
