A neighbour of a house which it is believed was struck by lightning, setting it on fire, has described hearing the blaze start.

The incident is reported to have happened just before 2am today in Glenn Way, Coalville, during a lightning storm that caused multiple incidents of damages across the county.

"There was a loud thunder bang at around 1.30-2am which I think would've been the house catching fire," the neighbour, who did not want to be named, told LeicestershireLive.

"The fire service arrived just after 2am. You could hear the sirens come onto the estate."

The woman said she did not leave her house to see what was happening, but described the scene the next morning.

"The whole road was closed off, " she said.

"They had found this big hole in the roof, which is a bit shocking. All the neighbours were out to have a look."

She said the hole "takes up about half of the roof" of the semi-detached home.

"There's now a tarpaulin over the hole," she added, "and I think the upstairs is flooded from where the fire brigade put the fire out."

She said she had spoken to someone who lives at the property about the fire, and they had replied that it was "just one of those things".

East Midlands Ambulance Service was in attendance at the scene. One person had suffered smoke inhalation.

Another house in Nottingham is also believed to have been struck by lightning in the early hours of the morning. The roof was destroyed, reported NottinghamshireLive.
