The county council has revealed what safety improvements will be made at a notorious county blackspot.

The crossroads between Charley Road, Iveshead Road and Abbey Road, between Coalville and Shepshed, has become infamous for crashes.

A Freedom of Information request submitted to Leicestershire Police earlier this year showed that between the beginning of 2014 and the end of 2018, there were 23 reported crashes at that junction alone.

Those collisions resulted in 45 casualties.

There have been at least seven crashes at the junction so far in 2019. The most recent was yesterday at around 5pm. It involved two vehicles, one of which ended up on its side, said a spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police. Nobody was injured, but the road was blocked while the scene was cleared.

It is hoped that the new safety measures planned by Leicestershire County Council will reduce the number of accidents at that location.

A county council spokeswoman told LeicestershireLive that the work, which is due to start in August, would include installing additional rumble strips and new road signs in all directions.

She said there would also be additional signs installed to indicate bends in the road, and the carriageways will be resurfaced at the junction, and re-textured to increase grip.

Road closures will be put in place while the work is carried out.

The spokeswoman said: "The work which is due to start in August (subject to weather conditions) will be carried out over two weekends (which are still to be confirmed) these will involve some road closures."

Road closures will be in place in: Abbey Road, Shepshed, for its entire length; Abbey Road, Charley, between Oaks Road, Charley and Abbey Road Shepshed; Charley Road, Shepshed, between Ashby Road West and Oaks Road; and Iveshead Road, Shepshed, between Abbey Road and Iveshead Lane.

A notice published in the Leicester Mercury on Friday, July 12, said that the road closures were due to be put into place from Saturday, July 27.

These are not the first safety measures implemented at the junction.

In summer 2017, the county council added rumble bars to the road leading up the junction and reduced the speed limit from 60mph to 50mph.

Following the Freedom of Information request, a county council spokesperson said: "We're sorry to hear of the recent incidents at the Iveshead Road/Abbey Road/Charley Road junction in Shepshed.

"Since 2016, a number of safety measures have been introduced, including additional signage, road surface improvements, installing rumble strips and a speed reduction to 50mph.

"Despite these changes, we recognise that accidents are still occurring and we'll be looking at introducing measures that will improve driver behaviour such as new lining and putting in additional vehicle activated signs.

"In the meantime, we'll continue to monitor this junction to find out why these incidents are still happening."
