Residents in Hinckley are in sudden need of sandbags after torrential downpours during the last few days.

The town was hit by heavy burst of rains in the afternoon of June 17, in a second day of stormy weather in the area.

Sam Manning lives with her three children in a council house on Holt Road in Burbage, which backs onto a stream that connects to Sketchley brook.

They found their driveway swamped with water during a downpour, while the small stream overflowed so much that children could paddle in the waters.

Sam said: “It completely burst its banks. It’s the second time I’ve seen it happen, it happened last year.

“It came out of nowhere.”

The mum only just managed to close her back door in time before the waters came into her home.

She said: “I’ve raised the issue with Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council as I am a council tenant.

“I’ve requested sand bags to no avail, and been told they won’t add the drainage needed to prevent flooding.”

The council said they had received requests from eight properties for sandbags, with six of them on June 16 and two more on June 17.

A spokesperson said: “During emergencies, sandbags will be provided to elderly and disabled people in priority before other members of the public.

“Due to demand, it will not be possible to deliver to everybody, therefore it is better for sandbags or other defences to be obtained prior to an event.

“Elderly and disabled people who wish to have sandbags in advance should contact us on Hinckley 238141.

“Sandbags will not be made available for the protection of gardens, outbuildings or garages.”

Another resident also filmed the bursting banks of Battling Brook near their home in the town.

The rains flooded Asda on Barwell Lane in Hinckley, forcing the store to close yesterday afternoon.
