Schools in need of roof repairs and other works in Hinckley and Bosworth are to have their facilities upgraded thanks to Government funds.

Seven centres are to get a share of a national £434 million investment to expand classrooms and ensure students have a safe environment to study in.

The money will support Redmoor Academy in Hinckley, Barwell Academy, St Peter’s Primary Academy in Market Bosworth, St Simon and St Jude’s Primary in Earl Shilton, Thornton Primary, Barlestone Primary, and St Margaret’s Primary in Stoke Golding.

The funds will pay to replace doors and windows and a boiler, and to install building fabric, among other works.

Dr Luke Evans, MP for Bosworth, said: “Coronavirus has taken a toll on us all, not least our children, who have been kept from their friends, their teachers and their schools.

“As we exit lockdown we must focus on getting children back to school – and ensure that schools have the facilities and classrooms they need to support the high-quality education our children deserve.

“This funding will help ensure all children have the very best possible schools and education, enabling them to gain all the knowledge and skills they need for success.”

The cash forms part of £1.4 billion of capital funding for 2020 to 21 announced in April and is provided through the Condition Improvement fund.

It will pay for brand new buildings and better facilities.

The Prime Minister has also announced a 10-year school rebuilding programme, launched with over £1 billion for the first 50 projects in 2020 to 21.

Gavin Williamson, Education Secretary, said: “My number one focus will always be to make sure every student has access to excellent education and training.

“Replacing and upgrading poor condition school and college buildings with modern, energy efficient designs will give our students and teachers the environment they deserve, and support them to maximise their potential.

“As we look forward to this September and all children returning to school, we can be assured that for years to come this country’s education system will drive opportunity and prosperity for all.”
