The county highway authority has asked for people not to interfere with roads signs after somebody foolishly reversed a speeding restriction notice at the notorious Iveshead Road danger junction in Shepshed.

Instead of alerting motorists that the approaching speed limit was 50mph, it displayed the national speed limit of 60mph.

The sign had been turned the wrong way round.

A Leicestershire County Council spokesperson said: “We have been made aware that signs at the Charley Road, Abbey Road and Iveshead Road junction in Shepshed were facing the incorrect way.

“They were installed facing the right way in September and since then appear to have been moved.

“We have visited the site and re-positioned the signs and they are now facing the correct way. The safety of motorists is an absolute priority for us and we would ask that people do not move highway signs.”

Both the county council and the Loughborough Echo were alerted to the problem of the signs, by Lesley Hamilton, who used the crossroads every day before the lockdown.

When she heard they were now in the correct position she told the Echo: “Although the end result of this issue is to be welcomed, I just want to say that it’s a shame the county council didn’t act weeks ago when I reported it directly to them.”

The junction is notorious for the number of accidents and incidents there. Since 2016, a number of safety measures have been introduced by Leicestershire County council, including additional signage, road surface improvements, installing rumble strips and a speed reduction to 50mph.
