Burning fuel spilling onto a carriageway has closed the main road between Melton and Waltham on the Wolds.

A fire crew from Melton, which attended the incident, on the A607, shortly before midday, has had to extinguish flames from the burning fuel which spilled onto the road after the car’s fuel tank split.

The road is being shut by police while the damage is assessed.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service Control tweeted: "@LFRSFireControl: @MeltonFire dealing with car fire on A607 between Melton and Waltham on the Wolds - fuel tank has split so fire also on the carriageway, Police and Highways aware #DriveSafely “.

A fire service spokeswoman said "1 car fully involved in fire. Fuel tank has split so roadway also involved in fire

"2 breathing apparatus 2hose reel jets & AFFF (Aqueous Film-Forming Foam) in use."

The statement later added: "Breathing Apparatus withdrawn, damping down in progress, 1 hose reel in use

"STOP confirmed fire extinguished but damping down. Fire Service assisting Police in closing road pending attendance of Highways agency."

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: “We were called at 11.53am about a car on fire on the Melton side of Waltham.

"There are no injuries and the road is being shut so the damage to the road can be assessed.”

Leicestershire Police say the road, which was closed in both directions while fire service tackled blazing car has reopened.

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire County council Highways said:”We will be assessing the road for permanent repairs as soon as it is safe for us to do so.”
