The shocking number of crashes which have happened at a "notorious" blackspot crossroads in Shepshed have been revealed.

A Freedom of Information request submitted to Leicestershire Police also revealed the staggering number of casualties from crashes that happened at the Charley Road/Abbey Road crossroads.

The FOI gave the figures from the beginning of 2014 up until the end of 2018, and they showed that in the last four years there have been 23 crashes at that one junction - one of which involved a bike.

Mark Cook, 46, who owns Drybrook Farm near to the junction said: "I am getting rather cheesed off with all these crashes.

"Everytime the cars are dragged out the fence gets knocked down. Whenever I pay to get the fence put back up, it ends up down again.

"I am worried some cattle could escape, as they have in the past."

The numbers gradually increased year on year, with only one in 2014, but five in 2015, six in 2016 and seven in 2017.

In summer 2017, the county council added rumble bars to the road leading up the junction and reduced the speed limit from 60mph to 50mph.

At the time, Coun Blake Pain, county council cabinet member for highways, said: "We have completed the development of a scheme to address issues around accidents at the Iveshead Road, Charley Road and Abbey Road crossroads, and works have already been ordered.

"It is expected that these works will begin in August.

"The improvements will involve making the junction more visible by providing additional signage. Hazard perception bars (rumble strips) will be improved on the main road (Abbey Road), and added on the side road (Charley Road), and the speed limit will be reduced to 50mph."

These changes appear to have made a difference, as there were only three crashes the following year.

However, the problem does not seem to have abated, as there have been at least four crashes at that junction in 2019 already, on April 8, 9, 16 and on May 4.

From 2014 to 2018, there were 45 casualties resulting from the collisions with seven of those casualties sustaining serious injuries.

Following the latest incident around 8pm on May 4, a two car crash, three people were taken to hospital and a fourth required no further treatment.

A Leicestershire County Council spokesperson said: "We're sorry to hear of the recent incidents at the Iveshead Road/Abbey Road/Charley Road junction in Shepshed, but we are still awaiting further information from the police.

"Since 2016, a number of safety measures have been introduced, including additional signage, road surface improvements, installing rumble strips and a speed reduction to 50mph.

"Despite these changes, we recognise that accidents are still occurring and we'll be looking at introducing measures that will improve driver behaviour such as new lining and putting in additional vehicle activated signs.

"In the meantime, we'll continue to monitor this junction to find out why these incidents are still happening."
