Tributes left crash victim

Flowers and candles have been lovingly placed on a pavement to mark the spot where a driver lost his life in a car crash.

Grieving friends and relatives have left the tributes after a man, in his 30s, died after his car hit a lamppost, a wall and several parked cars before ending up on its roof in Ashby Road, Loughborough, at the weekend.

The man was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene just after midnight on Sunday morning.

The tributes have been left next to the twisted remains of the lamp post that the red BMW collided with.

Supermarkets' fears as new Aldi approved

Plans for a new Aldi store in Leicestershire have been approved despite the concerns of established rival supermarkets.

The discount retailer has been given planning permission to develop a food store on the southern edge of Lutterworth, near the Whittle roundabout..

Councillors on Harborough District Council voted to allow the firm to build the new store, creating 40 new jobs, despite objections by Waitrose and Morrison’s which already have established stores in the town.

Bulldozers demolish village pub

Bulldozers wasted no time in getting back to work demolishing a village pub when lockdown restrictions were lifted.

Construction vehicles at the Tom Thumb, Blaby, went untouched for weeks after lockdown measures were introduced at the end of March, but shortly after some restrictions were relaxed, work was back underway.

The old Everards inn, in Grove Road, is being knocked down to make way for 10 new homes.

Leicester lockdown protest fails

City authorities have confirmed that there were no mass lockdown protests staged in Leicester over weekend.

It appears that posts on social media last week failed to result in 'mass gatherings' in either Braunstone Park or Abbey Park.

Early in the week a group named UK Freedom Movement began to circulate posts around social media.

The posts called for people to gather in mass at local parks to protest against the ongoing lockdown.

Among them were the two city parks.

Buy Stilton, save cheesemakers

Many people may think of Stilton as just a Christmas treat, but cheese-lovers are being encouraged to buy the versatile food ingredient now to protect its year-round future.

This comes amid the news that sales of Stilton have dropped by up to 30 per cent as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

New figures released today by the Stilton Cheese Makers Association (SCMA), which represents the UK’s Stilton producers, shows that sales have plummeted as a result of the closure of the country’s hospitality and events industry, farmers markets and with export markets also being in lockdown.
