Water outages have been reported in Leicestershire and across the Midlands with demand reaching a level never seen before.

Severn Trent, the water supplier across the region, has been working towards getting the supply back on for those reporting no water supply they say.

MP for Harborough, Oadby & Wigston, Neil O'Brien tweeted today reassuring his constituents that the water issues were being dealt with. He said: "There are two issues - record demand leading to low pressure, plus an airlock near Church Langton / Kibworth which they are fixing.

"If you are stuck ring 0800 783 4444 for help. Or email me. People can help by not using hosepipes It should get cooler on Wednesday."

Today Severn Trent released a statement stating that water is being used quicker than they can safely produce it.

The statement said: "We know many of you are having problems with your water pressure and supply at the moment. We’re doing all we can to keep up with demand.

"This is something that’s happening across the region, and all over the country too.

"The hot weather has been wonderful. It’s helped us all to deal with what is already a challenging time with Covid-19 affecting our all our lives too.

"However, the warm weather and more of us being at home than normal, has meant demand for water has increased to a level we’ve never seen before. The water in pipes is being used faster than we can produce safe, clean, treated water to replace it.

"We’re doing as much as we can to increase production and top-up supplies.

"The Network Response Team have been preparing tankers, 24 hours a day, to support the high demand for water across our region.

"Each day they’re preparing and sending out more tankers, filled with treated, clean water, to try to keep water flowing.

"We know this is an incredibly difficult time for so many of us, and it’s vital we keep water flowing for everyone, so please, think twice before you turn the tap on."

They issued a list of advice for those if they are able to:

  • Switch to a watering can rather than using a sprinkler in the garden
  • Wash your car with a bucket and sponge instead of a hose
  • Cover paddling pools overnight and let the kids play in the water again the next day.
