The doors of Snibston’s disused colliery were opened to the public at the weekend revealing the untouched interior of the Coalville landmark.
Many areas of the building have been left almost completely as they were when the coal mine was closed in 1985 after more than 150 years of coal extraction and it was the first time many of the areas inside the buildings had been seen by members of the public since.
The tours explored the lamp room and control room and how showed how the mines were managed and how the workers were lowered nearly 1,000 feet into the mine.
People visiting could follow in the footsteps of past miners during the weekend tours, which were part of the Hello Heritage Festival organised by Leicestershire County Council.
Former minors and other members of Snibston Heritage Group showed people around the colliery, which is a scheduled monument.

Leicestershire County Council, which recently sold of a large part of the Snibston Discovery Museum site, is looking to create a new heritage attraction to teach people about the area’s coal mining history.
