Drivers can enjoy a smoother ride around the Hinckley area as road surface improvement works have been completed.

Several streets have been covered with a fresh layer of bitumen and loose stone, which traffic then embeds to create an even surface, to help reduce the chance of potholes.

The work was carried out in Sketchley Lane and Forresters Road in Burbage, Thurlaston Lane in Earl Shilton, Higham Lane in Stoke Golding, Stoke Lane in Higham on the Hill, and on High Street, Mill Street, Hinckley Road, The Common, Stapleton Lane and Kirby Road in Barwell.

Hollycroft and Wykin Road in Hinckley were the last of the roads in the area to get the treatment, as part of a county-wide surface dressing project which will include more than 700,000 square metres of road.

Leicestershire County Council announced the works in April.

A spokeswoman said: “Surface dressing is a process where you put down bitumen and then cover this with loose stone.

"The traffic then embeds the stone into the surface.

"This is followed by 3 sweeps, usually done after 48 hrs, 7 days and 28 days where we will collect all the loose stone.

Surface dressing - love it or hate it?

“Surface dressing is up to 10 times more cost effective than conventional resurfacing, and therefore helps create and sustain a resilient highway network – acting as the surfacing layer to prevent water penetration and help avoid damage caused by the weather.”
