First person account of commuter chaos on trains

Reporter Cathrina Hulse managed amongst much pushing and shoving to board the 7.34am train from Dorridge to Snow Hill this morning albeit later than scheduled.

Several trains had already been cancelled during the typical Monday morning commuter rush as the huge blaze at a factory in Tyseley saw trains trapped at the nearby depot.

Cathrina said: “I would normally catch the 7.34am service from Dorridge to Snowhill to get in to the Birmingham Live offices in nearby Church Street for 8am but I could see from Twitter and my live trains app that many services had been cancelled or delayed.

“I hoped for the best and joined dozens of commuters at station to wait for the delayed train.

“We all managed to get on but it was literally like sardines in a tin!

“I have never been so uncomfortable on a train - there was literally not an inch of space between passengers as we all huddled together.

“It was amusing though as in typical British fashion several passengers cracked jokes about the close proximity and the health and safety issues!.

“One thing the journey taught me is that commuters desperate to get to work will do anything to get on a train. At Olton station, despite passengers already dangerously squashed against the doors, two passengers still managed to squeeze on, refusing to budge despite the train doors trying to close.

“One man in particular merely shuffled each time the door tried to shut until he manoeuvered himself into the most precarious position - this despite several glares and murmurings amongst his fellow claustrophobic travellers.

“God loves a tryer!”

Passenger 'fainted' in train drama

A passenger on the Stratford - Birmingham Snow Hill train claims another commuter was forced to push the emergency button after someone ‘fainted’.

He described the drama as the guard intervened to help the passenger off the train.

He said:

Everybody was so squashed in that nobody could tell what was happening. Someone just said ‘please press the alarm’ when the train stopped at Hall Green.

The guard had to try to get on board a carriage with no room, promising that people who got off would be allowed back on.

After about two minutes, it seemed that the passenger who had fainted had managed to walk off the train with help from the guard.

He then had to force his way back on through the ‘sardined’ passengers again in order to use his special key to switch the emergency button off.

Even at Spring Hill, Tyseley and Small Heath it was impossible for other passengers to get onto the train.
