If Leicester City are to hit the ground running and book their place in next season’s Champions League, they will likely need Jamie Vardy to continue firing in the goals.

The striker has 19 to his name this season and sits atop the goalscoring charts, putting him on course to be the top flight’s oldest leading marksman in more than 70 years.

And the 33-year-old has delivered a message that will delight City fans with excitement building towards the restart of the campaign in a fortnight’s time.

Writing on Instagram, Vardy said: “Feeling fitter every day.”

And that’s a statement backed up by Brendan Rodgers.

The manager, speaking last week, said: “He looks great, hungry. All the players have come back in a really good condition and he, like the rest of them, looks very sharp and explosive. Give him another three weeks and he’ll be right up to speed I’m sure.”

Up until the 4-0 thrashing of Aston Villa just before the Covid-19 pandemic closed down the Premier League, Vardy had not scored since Christmas.

But the striker ended his goal drought with a double against the club’s Midlands rivals.

Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is Vardy’s closest challenger, with the Gabonese forward having netted 17 goals so far.

Mohamed Salah and Sergio Aguero are a goal further back.
