Leicester City icon Martin O’Neill has admitted he needs to be more careful in his research as he mulls over a return to management.

The former City boss has been out of work since a spell at Nottingham Forest ended in the sack after just six months last summer.

O’Neill, now 68, is not ready to retire from his 30-year career in the dugout, but after the short-lived stint at the City Ground, he has said that he must be more thorough in deciding which owners to work for.

“I would really have to look and take a wee bit more of a careful look at who you are working with,” he told Sky Sports when asked about a potential return to the touchline.

“Be it owners or CEOs, I would look at that a wee bit more carefully than I have done rather than taking things at face value.”

Twenty years on from his City exit, O’Neill remains a favourite at the club, having overseen a run of four top-10 Premier League finishes and a pair of League Cup triumphs.

He left for Celtic in 2000, and has since managed Aston Villa, Sunderland, and the Republic of Ireland national team.
