Former Leicester City manager Ian Holloway has tipped his old side to be the Premier League’s “dark horse” next season and challenge for a Champions League place.

Holloway, who oversaw City’s first and only relegation to the third tier of English football in 2008, believes the experience of manager Brendan Rodgers could see Leicester on the coattails of Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham at the top of the division.

The 56-year-old, currently without a club, ranks Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino as the Premier League’s leading coaches, but reckons Rodgers’ know-how could see City surpass the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea, who could both have inexperienced men in charge next season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and United finished last term in dismal form, while Frank Lampard could potentially be arriving at Stamford Bridge for what would be just his second season as a manager.

“I’m going for a dark horse to be up in and around the top,” Holloway said on Talksport.

“I’d love to see one of my old clubs Leicester City up there because it didn’t go very well for me there. I’d love to see them burst into that top group with their manager.

“I’m going for managers. Liverpool, Tottenham, Man City have, for me, three of the best managers in the world. Then I’m looking at Brendan Rodgers and his experience.

“At Leicester City, what can he do? Wow, that’s what I’m thinking.

“If Chelsea go for Frank, he’s still cutting his teeth, but I think that’s the right thing, I don’t think they can give it to anyone else. Man United have stuck with Ole.

“For next season, I’m always looking at the managers side of things, let’s see what inexperience does against experience.”
