Leicester City fans have called for development squad defender Alex Pascanu to be given a first-team chance after his solid displays for Romania at the Under-21 Euros.

Centre-back Pascanu outshone City’s England trio James Maddison, Demarai Gray and Harvey Barnes on Friday night as Romania beat Aidy Boothroyd’s side 4-2 in frantic finish in Italy.

The result helped Romania strengthen their hopes of a semi-final berth − they beat Croatia 4-1 in their opening game − but saw England knocked out of the competition.

Pascanu, who signed a new City contract before heading away on international duty, has performed well in both of his nation’s games after a fine campaign for the under-23s in Premier League 2.

The 20-year-old, who can also play at full-back, has plenty of competition at the King Power Stadium with Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, Wes Morgan, Caglar Soyuncu, Filip Benkovic, Darnell Johnson, Josh Knight and Sam Hughes all available to Brendan Rodgers, but supporters believe Pascanu deserves an opportunity.

@MrJSkitz: “Well played Alex Pascanu, that lad seems to have a bright future.”

@H_Mclean91426: “Breakthrough season for Pascanu if Maguire goes or too soon? He’s gonna be some player!”

@ffsAlexxx: “Get Pascanu in the team that lad is a rock at the back.”

@ffsleWiis: “Would anyone like to see Pascanu have a run in the first team next season?”

@thetruefoxyt: “Alex Pascanu has been quality, definitely needs to be given a chance this season. He is going to be some player!”

@JSnash: “Exciting finish but #ENG poor over two games. Loads of holes in defence. Romania very good, though. Hope Pascanu gets near the #LCFC first team this season.”

@diabxte: “Pascanu is class, great to see.”

@Omodon: “Pascanu is looking impressive for the Romanians, that’s at least three decent young centre halves with Soyuncu and Benkovic as well.”
