Leicester City fans have delivered their verdict on how to wrap up the 2019/20 Premier League season should it not be possible to complete the remaining games.

As things stand, the Premier League is due to resume on June 17 with games between Manchester City and Arsenal, and Aston Villa and Sheffield United.

The Foxes first game will be at Watford the following weekend.

They are well-placed for a return to Champions League football - currently sitting in third in the Premier League table, a whopping eight points clear of Manchester United in fifth with nine rounds of action remaining.

But should fixtures not be able to be completed because of a resurgence of coronavirus infections, Foxes fans are backing two options to decide the final placings in the 2019/20 table - and both would see their team back in Europe next season.

They have had their say as part of the Great Big Football Lockdown Survey, which was jointly  commissioned by Leicestershire Live and its sister Reach PLC websites and attracted up to 15,000 respondents from across England and Wales.

There were 322 responses from Leicester fans, and if it is not possible to complete the season they are split between using a point-per-game formula to finalise placings (46%) and freezing the current standings (45%) - both scenarios which would see the Foxes enter the Champions League next season.

A whopping 88% of Foxes fans who responded believed relegation should remain in place this season, a response that may partly be fuelled by Aston Villa’s current plight in the top-flight drop zone and traditional Midlands football rivalry.

The suspension of English football came at a time when the race for European football was really hotting up in a heavily congested top half of the table.

As things stand, just three points separate fourth-placed Chelsea and Manchester United in fifth, while the Red Devils are just two points clear of Wolves and Sheffield United respectively.

Tottenham, two points further back, and Arsenal, a further point back but with a game in hand, also have a realistic if improbable shot at a top four position.

Leicester appeared to be well on course for a Champions League finish but football was halted at a time when they were enduring their worst form of the season.

The Foxes had won just two of their last eight Premier League matches - home wins over lowly duo West Ham and Villa - while they had lost four in that run, including at basement side Norwich City.
