Wilfred Ndidi produced a man-of-the-match performance as Nigeria beat Burundi 1-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations opener on Saturday evening.

The Leicester City midfielder produced a tidy display in Alexandria, Egypt, and was named the game’s star player as Nigeria clinched the three points late on, former Watford striker Odion Ighalo coming off the bench to score with 13 minutes to play.

The result gives the Super Eagles the early lead in Group B and with 16 of the 24 teams at the tournament qualifying for the knockout rounds, Ndidi and co. likely need just one point from their final two pool fixtures, against Guinea and Madagascar, to ensure they progress.

With Kelechi Iheanacho left out, Ndidi is the only City player in the Nigeria squad.

However, he is not the only City player at Afcon. Islam Slimani, who spent last season on loan at Fenerbahce, is in action on Sunday.

Slimani will be hoping to feature for Algeria, who are captained by former City star Riyad Mahrez, when they take on Kenya in their opening game (9pm kick-off).

Ndidi is back in action against Guinea on Wednesday (3.30pm kick-off).
