Leicester City title-winner Robert Huth is surprised his former club have not invested in a new deputy for star striker Jamie Vardy.

The German centre-back, who was released by City last summer before announcing his retirement, believes Vardy’s current back-up Kelechi Iheanacho is unlikely to ever be good enough to fill the number nine’s boots.

The Nigerian striker has not featured in either of the two matches this season and has not scored competitively since last September, but did notch three goals during pre-season.

Vardy, now 32, is still to get off the mark this campaign.

Huth told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Eventually they are going to have to replace Vardy. I’m a little bit surprised they didn’t get in someone to kick him up the backside.

“With Iheanacho, he hasn’t done it yet, probably doesn’t look like he’s going to either, so I’m surprised they haven’t invested in that.”

Although City have not signed a new striker to deputise for Vardy, Huth does believe the club have a long-term vision that they are seeing through.

City have used seven players aged 23 or under in their first two games, the most in the division, and Huth said the club has made a concerted effort to bring in youngsters because of the age of the title-winning squad.

“That was the long-term plan,” Huth said. “Once we won the league... we were an aging squad. Myself, Wes, Kasper is in his 30s, Andy King is in his 30s. There has to be a plan in place when that day comes.

“They’re there, they’ve invested. Ben (Chilwell) went out on loan to Huddersfield, did really well there for a couple of months. Hamza (Choudhury) went on loan, had a few games, just got a bit of first-team experience and now it’s showing.

“Knowing the owners as I do, they’ll probably be stick to it. They don’t need to sell.”
