Here we are in the fifth month of the year, which is probably one of our favourites - due to there being two bank holiday weekends!

Plus, there's lots of brilliant events to enjoy this month here in Leicestershire.

Whether you fancy a night out with friends or a day of fun with the family, there's plenty of options.

Here's a few suggestions of things to do in May...

MELT Street Kitchen launch event - Market Place, Melton - Friday, May 3

Inspired by a passion for food and community, MELT Street Kitchen have teamed up with the Melton BID, crafting the very first street food festival in the heart of Britain’s rural capital of food.

This Friday's event is the first in a series of five summer events - taking place on the first Friday of the month from May until September.

Supported by Melton Mowbray Town and Estate and local food and drink producers, the event will enable you to eat some of the best street food the Midlands has to offer.

The line-up will include Toastie the Difference, serving grilled cheese all ways and halloumi fries, Gyro Guys, Ruby’s Street Kitchen's Mumbai flavours, Vegan Vice, Huns Vegan, local Farmer Lou’s Hog and Lamb roast, Vausages vegan sausages, Feast and The Furious, Bare Bones cinnamon dusted churros and coffee, The Gravy Train, Disco Fries, and Phata Phat's nostalgic 90's British Indian mash ups. 

When it comes to drinks, there will be a Brentingby premium craft gin bar, Round Corner Brewery beers and ‘Jean Jean’ the little yellow wine truck on tour from The Cheese Truck London’s troop, serving bubbly Elderflower Presse and Elderflower wine from Melton-based Witham Wines.

Also featuring live music, dancing and steel drums, the event runs from 12pm until 10pm.

Canteen - New Market Square, Leicester - Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4

Street food event Canteen is back, with a bank holiday special, featuring some of the best street food traders from around the UK.

You'll be able to enjoy food from the likes of Wallace and Sons (Friday Only) The Ottö-Men (Friday Only) Street Kitchen Brothers, Grill Brazil, The Italian Stallion (Saturday Only) WhatTheCluck and Platinum Pancakes.

There will be plenty of vegetarian and vegan options available.

Leicester bar TØNNE will have a craft beer bar at the event, and there will also be a gin stand, coffee cocktails, plus tea, coffee, hot chocolate and soft drinks.

There will also be DJs playing a mix of funk, soul and upbeat tunes.

The event will run from 4pm until 10pm on Friday and from 1pm until 10pm on Saturday. Entry is £1 (Free before 5pm). Children are free at all times.

Artisan Cheese Fair - Livestock Market, Melton - Saturday, May 4 and Sunday May, 5

If you're a big fan of Stilton, or you're mad about mature cheddar, then you'll be thrilled to know that the UK's largest cheese fair is returning to Leicestershire this weekend!

More than 60 cheesemakers and producers are expected to attend, showcasing more than 300 of the UK’s rarest and most sought-after cheeses, which visitors will be able to taste and buy.

Many of the winners and entrants from this year’s national Artisan Cheese Awards will be present at the fair.

The event is focused on smaller artisan cheese makers with producers coming from all over the British Isles.

It will run from 10am until 4pm each day. Admission is £5 (£4 in advance), with children under 16 free.

Meet Peppa Pig and George - Great Central Railway, Loughborough - Saturday, May 4 - Monday, May 6

Cheeky little piggies Peppa and George are returning to the Great Central Railway and will be making personal appearances at Loughborough.

The event promises to be lots of fun for all the family, with steam train trips, fun fair rides and face painting available.

See Peppa at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm, and see George at 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm.

Dragon and Fairy Weekend - Twinlakes Park, Melton - Saturday, May 4 - Monday, May 6

Say hello to Dreygo the Dragon with his massive 15ft wing span and smoke-breathing nostrils!

The walkabout dragon experience promises fun for all the family. With his horned face, scaly body, red eyes, smoke-breathing nostrils and wagging tongue, you're sure to be impressed!

Dreygo The Dragon will be accompanied by ‘Merlin the Magician’ wizard character. You will also be able to catch mischievous fairies around the park.

This is included in your day tickets and annual passes (no pre-booking required simply turn up on the day). Performance times will be confirmed around the park on event notices.

Handmade Festival - venues around Leicester - Sunday, May 5

Leicester's annual totally independent music and arts festival is back this weekend!

It aims to find the best new and forward-thinking music, comedy, art, film, performance and photography and bring it all together for one weekend.

The festival is curated by some of the city’s best loved independent venues and promoters, all of whom have been involved in putting on events for decades, working tirelessly to bring great things to Leicester.

Acts performing include Metronomy, The Futureheads, Mono, Jamie Lenman, Crows, Life, Blood Youth, Martha and Petrol Girls.

Movies At The Museum: Jurassic Park - New Walk, Leicester - Saturday, May 18

The first Saturday Cinema Club takes place this month, and, inspired by the Dinosaur Gallery at the museum, is showing Jurassic Park!

The cinema club will take place on the third Saturday of the month and will show a mixture of films – new and classic, musicals and animations.

Emergency Services Day - Bradgate Park - Sunday, May 19

Children will have the chance to ride in a mini fire engine when Bradgate Park's Emergency Services Day returns this month.

There will be vintage fire appliances to look at and learn more about, and you'll be able to meet members of the emergency services and learn more about the important work they do.

Groups attending the event will include the Fire Brigade Museum Society, Leicestershire Police, Leicestershire Search and Rescue, Air Ambulance and the National Emergency Services Museum.

The event will run from 10am until 4pm, and is held on the Deer Meadow at the heart of the Park, next to the visitor centre and Deer Barns Tearooms.

Entry to the event is free. Car parking for the day is £4 pay and display.

Bring The Paint - across Leicester - Monday, May 20 - Sunday, May 26

Award-winning international festival, Bring The Paint, returns to the streets of Leicester this month.

World renowned artists from America, Australia, Tahiti, Mexico, Germany, France, Greece and the UK will be transforming Leicester city centre with world-class mural paintings.

The festival will bring together 50 street artists with headline internationally acclaimed painters including Smug, Inkie and Insane 51.

Supported by Arts Council England, BID Leicester and De Montfort University, Bring The Paint is taking place in Leicester city centre from May 20 to 26, with the main events happening on Saturday May 25 in the Cultural Quarter and Sunday May 26 at Frog Island / The Mill.

The festival is expected to attract 10,000 visitors to the city and will involve giant buildings being painted, vacant retail units being brought to life, as well as spectacular 3D floor art being created.

There will be opportunities for children and families to get involved with workshops, music and food and drinks. Plus, the organisers will host an art fair, giving people the chance to purchase unique artwork.

Wallace and Gromit's Musical Marvels - De Montfort Hall - Thursday, May 23

Cheese-loving duo Wallace and Gromit are bringing their new live, interactive show to De Montfort Hall.

You will be able to go behind the scenes as Wallace prepares to perform his musical masterpiece My Concerto in Eee Lad with help from his faithful canine companion Gromit.

This unique experience features specially filmed animations as well as live orchestral accompaniment and escapades from the Picture House Orchestra and presenter Matthew Sharp.

This will be followed by a screening of the award-winning Wallace and Gromit film The Wrong Trousers, with the soundtrack performed by the orchestra live on stage - which, according to organisers, is a world first.

There are two performances - at 1.30pm and 6.30pm. Tickets for this grand day out cost £23/£21, or £19/ £17 for concessions. Family tickets (two adults, two children or one adult, three children) cost £71/£63. A schools offer is available.

Leicestershire Etsy team pop-up shop - Makers' Yard, Leicester - Saturday, May 25 - Monday, May 27

Don't miss this opportunity to meet, and buy from, talented local makers and designers.

Run by a team of local Etsy sellers, the event will showcase a selection of makers and designers, including Pip's Wonderland, RARE FOLK, Sew Sofia, Bear and Bobbin, Calla Crafts, Obsidian Butterfly, Suki Sabur Designs, Utensils, Honda and Hollie and Jemma Banks Designs.
