We're not short of cracking pubs here in Leicester - and now the best of the lot, according to Leicester CAMRA members, has been revealed.

The eagerly anticipated Pub of the Year 2019 results were announced at the Leicester Beer Festival this weekend.

The pub finishing in the top spot was The Blue Boar, in Millstone Lane.

With 189 votes, the popular city centre venue retained its crown - having also been named Pub of the Year in 2018.

The Richard III-inspired micro pub opened in 2016, in a former office unit that had been empty for 16 years.

It is owned by business partners Kieran Lyons and Richard Thomas, who also run The Ale Stone in Aylestone Road.

The Blue Boar offers a selection of real ale and cider sourced from microbreweries around the country, as well as a range of fine wines.

It's also known for its snack selection - including pork pies, cheese boards and impressive cheese and onion cobs.

Talking about the Pub of the Year win, Richard told LeicestershireLive: "We are proud of what we have achieved in the short time we have been open. It's a great reward for the hard work put in by all the staff. To win on our first attempt was amazing, but to win two years running is phenomenal.

"A big thank you to CAMRA and all our customers. The best way to predict your future is to create it. Hopefully we can carry on creating the best real ale experience in Leicester. Let's hope we can make it three in a row!"

In second place was The Blue Boar's neighbour, The Two-Tailed Lion, which opened in June 2018.

It was launched by Matt Baker and Alice Hubbard - the only Certified Cicerones (beer sommeliers) working in the city.

With a name which pays homage to the coat of arms of Simon De Montfort, Sixth Earl of Leicester, the pub features a back-bar tap wall, showcasing six frequently changing keg beers.

Other award winners included Cider Pub of the Year -  which was again won by The Old Horse, in London Road, Leicester - and Club of the Year, which went to Syston Social Club (which also won in 2018).

Beer fans in Leicester haven't been short of entertainment recently.

Leicester Beer Festival was held at the city's Haymarket Theatre, and ran from Wednesday, March 13 to Sunday, March 17.

The event had an 'out of this world' theme, commemorating the 50th anniversary of man's first steps on the moon.

It featured 240 ales served straight from the cask, plus a keykeg craft ale bar, a pop-up pub from sponsors Everards and bottles beers from Brewklopedia.

There was also a real cider bar, and The Travelling Juniper Berries speciality Gin and Prosecco bar, provided by The Black Horse in Aylestone.

Food included local Stilton cobs, local pork pies and sausage rolls. Excess cold food that remained after the event was donated to Leicester homeless charity The Bridge.

Shawn continued: "The beer festival had over 4,000 visitors who throughly enjoyed themselves at The Haymarket Theatre. People travelled far and wide with Rob from Texas probably the furthest (although our space-themed guest may say otherwise!)."

If you'd like to visit the Pub of the Year 2019, you'll find The Blue Boar at 16 Millstone Lane, Leicester. It's open 11am - 11pm seven days a week.
