British shoe manufacturer and retailer Clarks has closed its Leicester city centre store.

The shop, which was part of the Haymarket Shopping Centre, remains in darkness today, with stock having been removed from the shelves.

In the windows of the store, signs have been hung, saying:

"This isn't goodbye.

"We're in the process of moving our Leicester store to an exciting new location.

"To find your new favourite shoes in the meantime, why not visit us in Fosse Park or Loughborough."

It continues: "Alternatively, you can browse hundreds of styles at clarks.co.uk."

Clarks is a well-known name on the high street, and offers smart and casual shoe styles for men, women and children, with a free fitting service available in-store.

Its iconic desert boot was launched in 1950, and is still a popular style today.

The company was founded in 1825 by brothers Cyrus and James Clark in Street, Somerset - where it still has its headquarters.

The closure of the Leicester store follows the news earlier this year that Metro Bank was granted permission to open a new branch in the city centre, on the prominent corner site occupied by The Body Shop and Clarks.

The retail bank said it planned to merge the two existing units.

It said that the opening would create new jobs in the financial services sector, and provide additional banking choice for local people.

Commenting on the Leicester store closure, a spokesperson for Clarks told LeicestershireLive:

"We are planning to relocate our existing Clarks store to a new premises in Leicester. We are currently in negotiations with our landlords, so can’t comment any further on location or timescales at this stage.”

As well as the Fosse Park and Loughborough branches, Clarks also has shops in Hinckley, Coalville, Melton Mowbray and Market Harborough.
