Lincoln Mayor Seth Goodman has resigned. He posted a resignation statement on Facebook Friday night.

"The weight of this job within the past few months has become too much for me to handle," said Goodman.

"I have to remember myself, the business that I have worked so hard to acquire/build, and that you have every right to draw the line for your health and your sanity. I am not a quitter, and this decision has not weighed lightly on me by any means."

Ward 3 Ald. Ron Keller said he understands and thinks the stress of the job can be overwhelming during these difficult times.

“I don’t blame Seth Goodman for resigning. It has been a very trying three years, and unfortunately, too many people often thrust their qualms and dissatisfaction on the mayor’s lap, when it isn’t even his fault. I understand his decision and have been proud to serve alongside him. In his short tenure, Seth has done a tremendous amount of good for this city which he loves,” wrote Keller in a Facebook message.

Ward 1 Ald. Tracy Welch who was appointed as mayor pro-tem by Goodman, said he too understood the pressure but feels confident the city business will continue.

“Mayor Goodman’s resignation came as a surprise to many. The City of Lincoln was fortunate to have him as our Mayor for the past three years. As Mayor Pro Tem I will ensure that the city continues to move forward until the council decides who will fulfill the remainder of the Mayor’s term,” wrote Welch in a Facebook message.

“Fortunately Seth was very good about including others on city matters so I fully expect minimal disruption to any ongoing efforts and daily operations. I wish Seth the best of luck in his future endeavors.“

Per Illinois Municipal Code, members of the Lincoln City Council will elect an acting mayor from among themselves. And since the vacancy comes within 28 months of the next election, the acting mayor will serve out the remainder of Goodman’s term.

Goodman, who is a 2006 graduate of Lincoln Community High School and owner of ME Realty, was elected mayor in 2017. He defeated three opponents as a 29-year-old political newcomer. He is well known in the community for bringing back the Balloons Over 66 hot air balloon gathering.

The news followed Lincoln City Fire Chief Bob Dunovsky apology letter to the community for posting memes on his personal Facebook page attacking Democrats.
