A distraught woman has spoken out after her dog was attacked while walking through a cemetery in Lincoln.

The woman was walking through Newport Cemetery when the incident happened - and she has been left badly shaken up by the incident.

She said she was walking her dog there when she heard a woman shouting for her dog - and when she turned round, she saw a spaniel off its lead that was hurtling towards her and her dog.

The woman told Lincolnshire Live: "I heard a woman shout a dog's name.

"I hadn't even seen the dog until I heard them calling for it. I turned round and saw this spaniel running towards us.

"The owners were sitting on a bench where the war graves are and the dog was running towards us. It had a harness on and no lead.

"The owner was running after it and I said don't let your dog come near us - keep it away.

"The dog ignored the owner's shouts and went behind my dog and started snapping at my dog's tail.

"Our dogs ended up fighting and I managed to get the dog off my dog. It was awful - I walked off in tears."

The woman has complained to City of Lincoln Council and called for signs to be put up telling dog owners to keep their dogs on leads.

She said: "If you've got a dog that's going to ignore you, why let it off the lead, especially in a cemetery? I could've been paying respects to a loved one or on the way to the vets on Newport.

"People need to realise it's not about their dog being kind or nice - other dogs could be scared of dogs.

"They might not be as friendly - that's why they're on a lead. I don't think a cemetery is somewhere dogs should be let off leads.

"If the dogs were kept on leads this wouldn't have happened.

"I've seen it too many times where dogs are off the lead and there's no sign of their owners."

Another resident said: "It drives me crazy when I see people walking their dog through the graveyard off the lead.

"For all they know, the dog could run out of view and defecate on someone's grave and you wouldn't know to clean it up.

"I think it's so disrespectful. There should be signs up telling walkers to keep dogs on a lead."

The City of Lincoln Council have been approached for a comment.
