A man has been charged after an alleged assault where a lollipop man had his ear bitten off.

Jak Smith, 24, has been charged with common assault and inflicting GBH without intent after an incident at the Monks Road Vineyard Store in Lincoln on June 1.

The alleged victim was not on duty at the time but also suffered a broken ankle and leg.

Another person was also injured.

Smith of Ermine Close, Lincoln is set to appear at Lincoln Magistrates' Court today, Monday, June 10.

A statement from Lincolnshire Police said: "The charge relates to a report of violence against two people at the Monks Road Vineyard store on Eastbourne Street, at 7am, on 1 June."

People have spoken of their shock at the incident and say their thoughts are with the alleged victim.

John Siddle, spokesman for Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, told Lincolnshire Live: "He was not on duty at the time.

"As far as I know it was not work-related. It is believed to have happened in a shop at about 7.00am on Saturday, June 1.

"I know that he's in hospital with a broken leg, a broken ankle, and part of an ear was bitten off because of an incident that's occurred in Monks Road."

The man helps children get to and from Monks Abbey Primary School.

Deputy head teacher Ben Carver said: "He's part of our crossing patrol on Milman Road.

"Our thoughts are with him at this time and we wish him a speedy recovery."

John East, from Monks Road Neighbourhood Initiative, said: "I'm appalled.

"Thankfully this is not something that happens very often, but that's no good to this poor man.

"Our thoughts are with him."
