A tractor driver has been arrested following a low-speed police chase and a road block involving armed officers.

Police tried to pull the tractor and trailer over because it had no lights on, but the driver failed to stop.

Officers then gave chase at a speed of 14mph. They eventually created a road block to bring the tractor to a halt. The driver was arrested and some police vehicles were damaged in the incident.

Superintendent Paul Timmins said the incident "had the potential to cause severe damage and was a risk to life".

And he praised the work of armed response officers, local officers and control room staff.

He tweeted: "I authorised a static stop following the pursuit of a tractor.

"It had the potential to cause severe damage and was a risk to life. 1 in custody and minimal damage to police vehicles."

Supt Timmins told BBC Radio Lincolnshire that the incident happened near Market Rasen late last night, Thursday, September 5.

He said: "A member of the public called at about 10.30pm to say it was unusual to see a tractor towing a trailer at that time of night with no lights on.

"We found it quite quickly. It was doing 14-to-15mph and failed to stop for us."

He added that there was potential risk to the driver and other road users.

He said: "We did not know who was driving it or what his intention was.

"Given the nature of how it was being driven - they have gone both sides of the road - and that it did not stop we felt it [static stop] was a tactic we definitely needed to use before it got to a built up area."

Supt Timmins added that although it was not an armed police incident, those response officers are trained to carry out a static stop.

A police spokesman has provided further details of the incident.

They said: "This was a report of a tractor being driven from the Osgodby area in Market Rasen towards Caenby Corner and then Gainsborough.

"The vehicle was believed to have been stolen and had a dim headlight and a shredded tyre.

"The vehicle was stopped through the use of three police vehicles at the Springthorpe junction near Corringham.

"One police vehicle sustained light damage and a 29-year-old man was arrested."
