People have been left stumped after a sign from a council more than 150 miles away was found dumped at the side of the road in Lincolnshire.

The piece of signage has been laying next to the A17 between Kirkby la Thorpe and Sleaford for at least a week, although it has only been in recent days when it flipped over that its true nature was revealed.

The sign, emblazoned with the logo of Lancashire County Council and with no hint of irony, states the council is "helping you recycle".

Tony Storr was driving along the road on Tuesday, September 3, when he noticed the sign and it's bizarre message.

"I think it had been on verge sometime," he said.  "It's on the dual carriageway heading towards Holdingham from Kirkby la Thorpe.

"I'm not sure how long it had been there, I just noticed it more has it had flipped over and you could see the sign."

The sign was seen laying at the side of the road

Mr Storr said the message had left him laughing as he saw the irony in the situation.

"This is the Lancashire way of recycling - dump it in Lincolnshire!" he joked. "I thought was funny as it from Lancashire not Lincolnshire.

"The other strange thing is why would it be on that side of the road as you would of thought it would be leaving Lancashire, not heading back.

"It's flipped back over again so I guess it'll need collecting as it will be in the road soon."

Lancashire County Council says it has no idea how the sign has ended up laying next to the road in Sleaford as it is an old sign, and it does not transport waste through the area.

A spokesman for the council said: "This type of sign was used on the side of skips but was phased out around six years ago when we began a new contract for our recycling centres.

"We don't know how it could have ended up at the side of a road in Lincolnshire, but hope it will be removed and recycled."
