Used wet wipes, unwanted sofas and tonnes of plastic have been picked by residents who are fed up with flytipping in a village near Sleaford.

In the first two months of 2019, 12 frustrated residents collected 15 bags worth of rubbish.

The locals took up arms to battle the rubbish problem two years after spying lots of litter in and around their village of Leadenham.

Hilary Proctor, 73, of the parish council said: “We just got fed up looking at litter.

“The type of litter we get is obviously mainly thrown from passing vehicles.

“A lot of it is plastic which gets stuck in in hedges or ditches and gets lodged there.

“It’s a complete eye sore as well as causing possible damage to the wildlife.”

Leadenham Parish Council and local volunteers are now organising a ‘Sticking up for your Environment’ event.

The aim is to raise awareness about of the litter issue.

Ms Proctor said: “The more you face the fact that no matter how often you 'pick' - you never win. There is always as much again to pick up next month.

“Following getting together with the primary school, we realised that their enthusiasm had to be harnessed. Initially, it was going to be just a gallery of their posters, but it just grew with ideas, showing the actual amount of litter from one month – to show what items are flytipped.”

To spread the message, the council have teamed up with the local primary school to reveal the amount of litter they’ve collected this month, flytipped items deposited in the area and so on.

The event is to be held at Leadenham Village Hall on Wednesday, March 27, between 11am and noon.
